Tamara, the ranger knows he is there because he helps keep the trash picked up when he is there, which is most of the time. He told me he comes up there to get away from his family. He stays for the time limit, goes home for a few days and then comes back to the Shining Rock. The first time I met him, he had his 12 year old grandson with him. I also had my 16 year old grandson with me. His grandson latched onto my grandson and would even follow him to the "bush" and even tried to go into my grandson's tent when he was getting ready for bed. After a day and a half of this, my grandson said he could not handle the boy anymore. The boy was bragging that he was a member of a gang and the things he did as a member of that gang. The grandfather was just walking around with a foam cup full of what smelled like "20-20", so called wine; offering to share it or a beer with every one he talked to. That is why I am looking for another place that is quiet and is primitive (cannot afford the site rents anymore). I would not mind having someone to camp with; a friend fixed the door to my truck camper with a bar so I can bar it shut from the inside. It makes me feel a little more secure.

Did you report the drunk? They need to know that the guy is out there. I too camp alone. I camp at Mt Pisgah campgrounds sometimes. It is right across from the Pisgah Inn, which is nice. But I enjoying backingpacking to Shining Rock area. Don't let this guy run you off, chances are he is long gone.

I love the parkway and my late husband and I used to go to the Shining Rock Wilderness at the 420 mile marker a lot, especially in the blueberry season. My problem is that the last 2 times that I have gone there ( my husband died in 2002 so I camp alone now), a drunk shows up at my truck camper wanting to socialize. I cannot enjoy going there any more because of him. Can you suggest another place that I can go for peace and quiet? I have a 1998 Dodge Ram 2500 Quad-cab, V-8, 5.9 liter Short bed truck with an old beat-up shell over-the-cab camper. It isn't much, but it is a lot safer to camp in than a tent at my age; I am 68 years old (but in good health). I have not been camping, except those 2 times, in the past few years so things have changed somewhat in the mountains since about 2002. Thank you for your time and trouble.
Respectfully,
Betty Ross Brown
