Happy 100 birthday Boy Scouts of America.
Boy Scouts of America On this date in 1910, the BSA was incorporated by publisher W. D. Boyce. Boyce first learned about Scouting when a Scout refused payment for helping him through a fog. He was simply doing a Good Turn. For 100 years, Scouts across America have kept to that example, doing Good Turns daily. Today, we celebrate the 100th Anniversary of this great movement and begin our next 100 years of service.

Adventure Base 100 will be in San Diego this weekend, Jan 8,9,10.
We are going as a troop and probably bringing our cub scout pack as well.

Welcome Jon, I'm from the Sequoia Council, out of Fresno, CA. We live in Coalinga and work with Troop 413 from Hanford. My son has aged out of scouts, but is registered as an Asst. Scoutmaster as am I. I have served in a lot of jobs since my son brought home a flyer about Tiger Cubs.

We should do Nor Cal camp - out there! I do not have time to plan, but the cave is open in spring, all the way through ,until April 1st. I wish to go,but have little time to plan a large group outing. 3-4 people is easier, especially immediate family, but groups are harder ( I've done it for Boy Scouts ) I will support to the best of my ability. I would love to see Nor Cal have the same fun and camaraderie as So Cal has had !!!

Mid Spring is a great time, especially around Easter break. There are wonderful wildflowers, and they have had in interactive list that showed what was in bloom each week. If you are too late (mid May and June and into summer) the heat can be horrid. This area gets over 100 degrees during the late spring and summer. Warning, you must carry your water with you and there are no sources beyond the parking lots.
The website is very informative and the rangers that we met were most helpful. It looked like they had at least 7 different interpretative programs being presented this past weekend and all were in different locations through the monument. Condor viewing, information on the volcanic past, creatures of the night, and the history of the small reservoir and the Yellow-legged Frog that lives there were all subjects of presentations. The only gripe that I had was that the program information was not posted until Friday. Ususally it is posted on Monday for the week, but the computer tech. was away at a wedding this past week.

Wow, that's a lifetime experience! The condors, not the blisters lol.
I have never been to the Pinnacles, but since joining CampersIndex I've heard and seen photos of that area a lot. I think I'm going to have to make a point of going there, maybe next late spring.

We don't know if we saw the baby Condor, but we did get to see two yesterday near dusk.

We hiked from the Pinnacles Visitor Center which is now at the campground, to the Balconies Cave, over the balconies and back to the campground. A 9.6 mile hike according to the map. I think there were at least 5 different Scout troops in the park.

As we stopped to talk some of the leaders we looked up over the ridge behind the camp and there was a very large bird gliding over it. Binoculars were pulled out and we felt we might have seen a Condor. We continued walking toward camp and saw that the ranger was at the spotting scopes, so we went over to confirm. Yes, a condor in flight! He then pointed us to a tree just below the ridgeline that they use for roosting. A second condor was there. We watched a bit longer then the first condor settled in for the night. A wonderful experience despite the blisters.
