I also was curious, do you "car camp" or backpack. What features are you interested in. What sporting good stores are near you ?

Randy,
Before I might be able to help you, I need to know climate, Seasons, weather, Etc. that you might be using the tent in. Also, when you say "3 or 4 man tent" do you mean that 3-4 people will sleep in tent, or is that just the general size you are looking for. (Most 3-4 man tents sleep 2-3 comfortably )

I have a tent story. July 4 - 5, I forget the year, but not too long ago. I was camping in my tent at Seward Forest Preserve in Seward, Ill. During the night, a severe storm came thru the region. The next morning I emerged from my tent to see the devastation. Trees down, some landing on cars and RVs. The only damage my tent had was just a little pinhole puncture. No one was hurt, just real mad, except me.

I bought a light weight tent for my son when we started to outfit him for backpacking with the scouts. I boworred it for a campout with my younger son and loved it. It is made by ALPS and I bought it through REI Outlet online as a closeout. I got it for just over $100.00. It is an Orion 2 and is heavy but roomy. I was going to get one for myself but ended up finding a Serria Designs Clip Flashlight 2 person tent at a yearend sale at REI. ..Paid $45.00 for the tent that was returned after one use for a damaged zipper that i fixed in 5 minutes. I think I will like this one too.

I started a group on Living Outdoors Full Time at http://www.campersindex.com/group/livingoutside -- for tenters, RV'ers or whatever. Some of you might be interested in it. If you are actually living in or have ever lived in a tent or RV full time, please join the group.

Geez, here in WA State, if you tried to use a 'formula' to predict the weather, that would be foolish. Prepare for the possibilities, and GO, cuz if you waited for the weatherman to say its going to be perfect, you'd lose out on a lot of great camping!

living in Oklahoma, you just wait a little bit for the weather to change, if you don't see tornadoes, go camping!

Formula does not work anywhere. In California, we have so many "Micro-Climates that would render this formula useless. (I would imagine any state with many hills would also likely have similar effect) In California, we can vary as much as 40 degrees in 5 - 10 miles at same elevation. Part of this is due to Coastal Fog if near the coast, but also can be as much as 10 degrees different in about 500 yards due to Radiant heat from hills or wind from convection in the valleys.
