Welcome!

Hello!

Allow me to introduce myself and tell you a bit about my camping background...

I've camped for over 40 years as an adult, at times for 3-6 months at a time. I have been fortunate enough to have camped in heavy downpours, three feet of snow, 100 degree heat, and a wind so strong it tore out all my stakes, blew heavy rocks off the staked edges of my tarp, snapped the heavy rope anchor line that was tied down to a solid wood camp table, and just about rolled me right into the Hudson River -- tent, gear, and all.

Yes, I am very fortunate to have had each and every one of my camping experiences.

Some of the places I've camped are New Jersey, New York, Arizona, New Mexico, and in California -- the Kern River, Yosemite, Sequoia, the California coast, Death Valley and many more. While I love to sit around camp at times, I also love to get up and go do stuff when I'm camping.

I have backpacked, whitewater rafted, canoed, kayaked, and am anxious to do and learn more!

I absolutely love wildlife and seeing everything from grand vistas to the tiniest wonders in nature. From butterflies to bears -- they all fascinate and humble me.

I have camped with groups, family, friends, and many times I've solo camped or backpacked.

Because I solo a lot, I've taken a number of Wilderness Survival courses from Tom Brown, Jr. and find that the knowledge I have gained there only enhances my experience of the outdoors.

I am here to help you, the CampersIndex member, in whatever way I can to make your experience here fun, informative and to help you meet others with interests similar to your own.

Let's all get out there and camp even more this year!

Happy Camping to us all!

I'd go primitive or not, either way. I am always looking to get out somewhere, and meet new people. I'd be up for anywhere, but agree that Fourth of July in Colorado is almost impossible unless you ARE willing to go primitive, and hike in a few mile…

I just got from riding on snowmobiles into Yellowstone. Pretty fun, I'd recommmend it once in your lifetime-- although it's not exactly "nature-y" or "outdoorsy". It's fun tot see the geysers and mudpots in the snow/steam rising. I've been to Yellow…

Just returned from Joshua Tree NP -- great place, cool geology. That vast, vast desert surprisingly has many ecosystems.

Just returned from Joshua Tree NP -- such a great place this time of year. A bit windy by Jumbo Rocks and White Tank campgrounds, but Hidden Valley is more sheltered. I chose to go out of the park and back in again at Indian Cove campground. Excelle…

Know How to Identify Poison Ivy, Oak, and Sumac

From WebMD:

Poison oak has leaves that look like oak leaves, usually with three leaflets but sometimes up to seven leaflets per leaf group. It grows as a vine or a shrub. Poison oak is more common in the western United States, but it is also found in the eastern United States and, rarely, in the Midw… Continue

Help Save California's State Parks

In the coming months, there will be many ways you can help us save state parks. Right now, we're organizing volunteers to gather signatures to help qualify the State Park Access Pass for the November 2010 ballot. Yesterday, along with several other environmental partners, we took the first step of filing potential ballot language, the "California State Parks and Wildlife Conservation Trust Fund Act of 2010." Not only are park supporters the most passionate voices on this issue, but using volunte… Continue

Woops, this was supposed to go to you...I hear ya. April - June is very iffy for reservations in campgrounds that have been closed during the winter which is a bummer because the best time to go to Yosemite is May and June. Bridalveil will be on sale on the 15th or go with what you know. I've never been to Sequoia NP. Which campground to you like/prefer in Sequoia?

That doesn't mean earlier dates won't be available, but they probably won't be released on a specific date.

This is a notation under facility details for Tuolumne, "Tuolumne Meadows Campground has closed for the 2009 season. The opening date for 2010 is unknown due to snow and weather conditions. We will begin taking reservations for arrival dates of July 1, 2010 and beyond on February 15, 2010 at 7am Pacific time."

I just wanted to add, that when I tried to make reservations on 1/15 and couldn't, when I called the reservation line to find out why the sites weren't available it took me an hour and 15 minutes to get through. So online reservations is definitely the way to go.

The good thing about Tuolumne and Bridalveil is that reservations are not site specific so if you don't get a group site individuals can potentially get sites near one another and if someone wants to bring a trailer, and can get a reservation, they have that option. Although, when on the Bridalveil reservation page I didn't see where you make the online individual site reservations, only group and horse sites.

I'm having a problem with the comment "box." So...Tuolumne Meadows and Mariposa Grove as well as the Valley offer programs for children and adults (check out the "Yosemite Guide") that campers can go to from the outer lying campgrounds in addition to all that Yosemite has to offer.

A suggestion would be Sand Flat Campground in Staninslaus National Forest. I've never been there, but we have a friend that has been going there for 20 years who highly recommends it. We were going to check it out this summer.
